Technology Integration
Technology Integration Matrix and InTime Collection provide short video segments showing how teachers across the nation are integrating technology into their classrooms. I have gone through both sites and viewed some of the videos that deal with my area and level of initial certification.
I decided on five videos that I think demonstrate "successfully integrating technology" into the instructional process at my level.
Keyboarding Skills
I decided on this video because I think that keyboarding is an essential skill for students to learn. This is becoming more and more important as we move into the end of year testing being presented to students online. This year, in the state of Georgia, 3rd and 5th grade students will be required to take the test online. In this video the teacher has students practice keyboarding every day for morning work. She feels this will lead them to be more comfortable doing assignments that involve word processing later in the year.
Graphing
I feel that even I need to learn more about how to collect data and piece it all together using spreadsheets. I think this type of skill would be very beneficial for the students working with graphing and being able to manipulate it using software. In this video the students are doing just that, learning graphing but on a larger scale how to present it using spreadsheets.
Infectious Diseases
Although this video is listed as 6-8, I feel with a few modifications I could use this type of learning in my 5th grade science class. We just finished up a unit on microorganisms. They did some research on a list of harmful bacterial pathogens and created a Wanted Poster for it. In this video the students are working in groups to research and present information about an infectious disease in pretty much the same way. The difference is that in this video the students were able to choose how they wanted to present the information following the guidelines provided.
Science Year-end Culmination
I really like this video about a 5th grade science class that is making presentations on materials they have learned throughout the year. The students choose how they will create a presentation that will be shared with their classmates, but the exciting part is they will also share with a lower grade level. I like that students get some autonomy and flexibility to choose what technology works best for them and their project. I think this would be a wonderful way for students in 5th grade to prepare the 4th grade students for next year. I also feel this would lead to some excitement from the 4th grade class on what they would get to do the following year.
Public Service Announcement
The teacher describes how students worked collaboratively to create a public service announcement to discuss how humans negatively impact the environment. Again I liked this idea because it allowed the students some flexibility as they used the research they found and were able to decide on what their PSA movie should look like. In my school we are about to begin SEM clusters and I think this would be a great way to get students involved in a cause and for them to see they have a voice in world-wide events.
